Stretch of cold mornings this week April's longest since 1972

A spell of cold mornings in the Baltimore area set at least one weather record, and was close to matching others with three consecutive days dropping into the 20s overnight.

On Tuesday, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport dropped to 28 degrees, missing the record low of 23 degrees in 1907, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday, it got even colder at BWI, with a low of 27 tying a record mark most recently reached in 1985.

Thursday morning appears to have been the coldest of all, with a low of 25 degrees early this morning, according to preliminary data.

It was only the fourth time since record-keeping began in 1870 that Baltimore reached the 20s on three consecutive April days. The others were in 1972, 1965 and 1875.

The record for longest April chilly stretches was four consecutive days, starting April 5, 1982, over which the average low was 25.5 degrees, according to National Weather Service data.

The last time April saw even one day in the 20s was April 13, 2009, when the airport hit 29 degrees.

The stretch this time around doesn't appear likely to extend to a fourth day -- overnight lows are expected around 40 degrees as rain moves through Thursday night into Friday morning.
