Severe thunderstorms were moving through Western Maryland on Wednesday afternoon and could bring periods of heavy rain and damaging wind gusts to the Baltimore area later.

Boonsboro and Hagerstown in Washington County and parts of northern Frederick County were under a severe storm warning through 3:15 p.m., with a line of storms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts passing through.

The storms were expected to reach the Interstate 95 corridor by Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said the main threat from the storm activity would be heavy rain. The western half of the state also faced possibly severe winds, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
