The cool air that descended on the region for a pleasant Fourth of July weekend tied a record in Baltimore and made for the coolest Independence Day here in a decade.
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport hit 55 degrees early Saturday morning, tying a mark set in 1979. Normal lows this time of year are in the mid-60s, but dipped into the 50s both Saturday and Sunday.
The July 4 holiday was meanwhile the coolest since 2004, with a high of 80 degrees at BWI, compared with a high of 79 in 2004, according to the National Weather Service.
Normal highs this time of year are in the upper 80s, not too far off Friday's mark, but nonetheless Independence Day in Baltimore has neared 100 degrees twice in the past five years. BWI hit 97 degrees July 4, 2012, and 98 degrees July 4, 2010.
