Temperatures bottomed out at 5 degrees at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Thursday morning, a tenth morning to hit the single digits there this month.
That matches January 1982, in which lows of 9 degrees or colder were also recorded on 10 different dates. It's an obscure record, to be sure, but demonstrates what an anomaly this winter's cold temperatures have been.
There have twice been nine January days with lows in the single digits or colder in Baltimore, in 1961 and 1912, and there were eight such days in 1893 and 1981.
With two days left to be factored in, the average temperature so far this month is 27.6 degrees, which would tie for the ninth-coldest January on record.
Four cold weather-related records were set this month -- a 15-degree high Jan. 23, 5.1 inches of snow Jan. 22, and a 3-degree low and 16-degree high Jan. 7.
