The past few days' deluge brought April 2014 within a 10th of an inch of setting a record for "April showers" in Baltimore.
The rainfall tally reached 8.6 inches at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, just shy of a record of 8.7 inches in 1889. The 3.06 inches of rain that fell at the airport on Wednesday alone tied a record set in 1947.
From Monday through Wednesday, more than 4 inches of rain fell at the airport and across most of the region, with locally heavier amounts, as much as 7 inches in western Howard County. Some rainfall totals, according to the National Weather Service:
To the southwest, the storm was record-setting.
The rainfall Wednesday broke the daily records at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, and the weather service reported that the 7.41 inches of rain that fell at Dulles in April also broke a monthly record.
Baltimore is off to one of its wettest starts to any year, with 20.27 inches of precipitation since January the most since 1998.
