After warm May, 2014 still pacing as ninth-coldest year on record

Even after a bit of warmth in May, 2014 is on pace to be the ninth-coldest year on record in Baltimore.

Last month averaged 64.9 degrees at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. It was the first month this year with above-normal temperatures, and by a significant margin, at 2.5 degrees above normal.

But given the frigid start to the year, it's not enough to reverse a trend that has the year to date among the region's coldest.

The average at BWI from January through May is 43.3 degrees, the coldest since 2003.

That year was marked by both a cold start and a cold finish, and it ended up more than 1 degree below normal.
