BIG ISLAND, Va.—
A busy crossing over the James River is about to be replaced.
The Virginia Department of Transportation wants to build a new bridge for Route 501 at the Bedford and Amherst County line.
The current bridge was built in 1921. It's narrow and has no shoulder, which makes it difficult for large trucks to navigate.
Engineers want to put up a new bridge, about a mile upstream.
VDOT officials want to hear your thoughts about the project. You can share them at a public hearing October 23 from 4 to 6 p.m., at Big Island Elementary School.
