Overnight detours and lane closures on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County have been postponed, and are now scheduled to begin Wednesday and extend into next week.
Detours will take place on Interstate 81 North on Wednesday and Thursday, beginning at 10 p.m. each night and lasting until 6 a.m. the following morning.
Northbound traffic will be detoured at exit 118 in Christiansburg onto Route 11/460 and back onto Interstate 81 at exit 132 in Dixie Caverns.
Southbound lane closures will also be in place beginning at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday April 4. The closures will continue each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, a southbound detour will be in place on Monday April 1 and Tuesday April 2.
The detour will begin at 10 p.m. each night and end at 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound Interstate 81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 in Dixie Caverns onto Route 11/460 and back onto Interstate 81 at exit 118 in Christiansburg.
The detours and lane closures are a part of the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane between mile markers 120 and 125. Work on the truck climbing lane project is expected to be completed in November.
