You will soon be able to legally drive faster in one part of Carroll County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the speed limit on the Route 58 Bypass around Hillsville will increase from 55 miles per hour to 65 mph. The new signs are expected to be in place Monday.

The speed limit increase will affect about 3.4 miles of Route 58 in Carroll County and the town of Hillsville. The new 65 mph speed limit will be in place on the Route 58 Bypass between its western interchange with Route 58 Business and one mile west of Route 820 (Freemont Road).

The speed limit increase comes after a VDOT engineering study. VDOT coordinated with state police and local officials before the speed limit was finalized.

Here is the news release from VDOT:

The speed limit on the Route 58 Bypass around Hillsville in Carroll County will increase from 55 miles per hour (mph) to 65 mph.  Weather permitting, signs designating the new speed limit are expected to be in place on Monday, May 6.

The speed limit change will affect about 3.4 miles of the limited access portion of Route 58 which passes through Carroll County and the Town of Hillsville.  The new 65 mph speed limit will be in place on the Route 58 Bypass between its western interchange with Route 58 Business and 0.9 mile west of Route 820 (Freemont Road).

The Route 58 Hillsville Bypass met the criteria for the Virginia Department of Transportation to consider a speed limit increase as set forth in section 46.2-870 of the Code of Virginia which allows VDOT to conduct engineering studies on limited access roads such as the Route 58 Bypass and consider raising the speed limit up to 65 mph.

VDOT examined the alignment of the road, spacing of interchanges, design speed and crash history to determine that 65 mph was an acceptable speed limit for the Route 58 Bypass around Hillsville.
VDOT coordinated with the Virginia State Police and local officials before the speed limit change was finalized.
