An old school could soon be the new home for some.
The old Chatham Elementary School sold for just $10,000 this week to a Richmond-based real estate developer, Echelon Resources Inc.
The firm plans to turn the school into high-end apartments.
Chatham Elementary has been empty for nearly 10 years.
"The sooner they get to work on it the better. It's been very disheartening to watch it deteriorate to the point that it has. So I couldn't be more pleased," said Jenny Lee Sanders, the voter registrar who works next door to the school.
The firm has 180 days to remove underground fuel tanks and request rezoning for the site.
Supervisors expect the company to spend nearly $3 million to refurbish the building.
