A Lynchburg pageant winner is using her crown to share a message about depression.

Addison Walker is Miss Hill City 2013.  She's visiting schools, like Linkhorne Middle in Lynchburg, to talk about mental health issues.

Walker, who's now a student at the University of Virginia, battled depression in high school.  She's trying to help other girls avoid the same problem, by giving them advice and encouragement

"They're on the threshold of becoming adults and going to high school, so it's crucial to get them while they are still with their friends in middle school," Walker said.

Walker recommends exercising and goal setting as ways to keep a positive attitude.  She'll be going after a goal of her own when she competes in the Miss Virginia pageant next month.
