We've gotten word that ITT Exelis is laying off about 300 hourly workers at its plant in Roanoke County.
A spokesman for the defense contractor says workers were notified of the layoffs Wednesday.
He says the cuts are due to reductions in federal defense spending.
The plant produces night vision equipment.
The company had announced the job cuts in December.
Here is a statement from the company:
ITT Exelis is a long-standing leader in providing night vision technology for the U.S. military, first responders and international allies. Due to anticipated U.S. defense government procurement reductions, we have experienced an impact on the size and frequency of night vision contracts. This impact has resulted in a need for the ITT Exelis Roanoke facility to adjust production capacity, as well as employee headcounts, to match this new business reality. Approximately 300 hourly employees were notified on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 that they will be impacted by the work force reduction and salaried employees will be notified by the end of the month. ITT Exelis will continue to deliver on all contracts, and will also continue to develop the next generation of night vision technology to ensure that our military has the most advanced equipment and capabilities. We remain committed to our customers, and to providing the best night vision technology in order to protect national security and support our international partners and allies.
