A Campbell County jury has acquitted a former sheriff's deputy of several serious charges.
Samuel Candler, 27, was indicted last September on counts of rape, buying alcohol for a minor, and using an animate object for sexual penetration.
According to Campbell County Sheriff Steve Hutcherson, the department was made aware of the allegations on February 3, 2012. Candler resigned from the department later that month.
Candler's victim testified in court Tuesday that he raped and inappropriately touched her after giving her alcohol at a party in December, 2011. She was 20 at the time of the alleged offense.
Candler testified that he had sex with the woman, but that it was consensual following a game of strip poker. He was unaware of her age and said he did not give her alcohol.
Candler was found not guilty on all charges Wednesday, following two hours of jury deliberations.
