Some Bedford County students are jumping to help the American Heart Association.

Thomas Jefferson Elementary School held its 13th annual "Jump Rope for Heart" event Friday.

Kids learned the importance of having a strong heart and how movement and exercise can keep you healthy.  Different stations were set up throughout the school gym for students to jump over ropes and each other.

The event honored Cody Beck, a four-year-old boy who has brothers at the school.  He was born with a heart defect that caused him to have four surgeries before his third birthday.

"It creates such an awareness of not just taking care of the healthy hearts, but also those who aren't born with healthy hearts," said Gina Beck, Cody's mother.

"Jump Rope for Heart" is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.  Thomas Jefferson students raised more than $12,000 for the cause this year.  In past years the school has been the top fundraiser in all of Southwest Virginia for the "Jump Rope" program.
