Andy Griffith has died at the age of 86.Griffith was the star of "The Andy Griffith Show" which airs weekdays on WDBJ7 at 5:30 p.m.
Griffith also later went on to star in the long-running series "Matlock."
He reportedly died in Dare County on Tuesday morning. Dare County Sheriff Dough Doughtie confirmed said Griffith died around 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The town serves as the basis of Mayberry, the setting of the "Andy Griffith Show." A celebration in Mayberry every year called "Mayberry Days" celebrates the show.
The "Andy Griffith Show" centered around Sheriff Andy Taylor, played by Andy Griffith, taking care of the Town of Mayberry.
In May, another star of the show, George Lindsey, died. Lindsey played Goober on the "Andy Griffith Show." He was 83.
Before television, Griffith acted in the 1950s Broadway comedy "No Time for Sergeants" and the dramatic film "A Face in the Crowd."
Several media outlets, including TMZ,are reporting that Andy Griffith had to be rushed to the hospital in North Carolina on Tuesday morning.
According to TMZ, the 86-year-old was called to his home shortly after 7 a.m.
