Botetourt Co, VA—
It's not everyday a country music star like Lauren Alaina performs at your high school.
Every year, Star Country holds a contest to see which area school can raise the most toys for Toys for Tots.
James River High School won. The key club helped collect 2,332 toys.
"It shows we are a small family and that we care a lot about giving to others," said Junior Keith Mitchell.
James River High School has won the competition the last five years.
"I think it's pretty cool that's the 5th year in a row and that we are such a small town and like a smaller school than everybody else," said Junior Calyn Grandy.
The students couldn't believe Alaina came all the way to Buchanan to perform for them.
"It's crazy. A little town and a little school that has a big heart," said Senior Chole Swoope.
Lauren Alaina was last year's American Idol runner up. The country music star is just 17 years old.
"I think it's really cool that she is our age and a small town kinda person like us," said Junior Kayla Hannah.
Alaina can't believe such a small school collected so many toys.
She told News 7, "That's really cool. I didn't know there was only 500 kids at the school. I really don't know what to say because I'm stunned, that's impressive."
The students told us they are determined to win this competition again next year. They say it never gets old.
