A way to empower young women is taking shape in Roanoke.
It's called "The All Girl Teen Summit," and it was held Saturday morning at the Dumas Center. The idea behind the program is to give girls the tools they need to make smart and healthy choices.
Among the topics are healthy relationships, self image, and sexual health.
"The Roanoke Valley, and us as a community, we need to come together to help our teens," says Co-Director Denitra Birkes. "Because if they don't have help from home or from the right sources then we never know what they'll be into. And, I want to make sure we have better SOL scores, we have higher graduation scores, we have less teen pregnancies and we can send more of our students off to college."
The group's motto is one girl at time. Organizers say Saturday's session is a jumping off point for future meetings.
The hope is to grow and give girls the opportunity to make their dreams come true.
