JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan.—Kansas voters are hitting the polls on Tuesday as part of the state wide primaries. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This will be the first round of voting for seats on city councils, county commissions and school boards.
Wyandotte County is voting on candidates for the Board of Public Utilities. This is also a big election in the Shawnee Mission School District where four candidates filed for position 7 which is an at large seat. The candidates are Bart Altenbernd , Mark Anderson , Joan Leavens John St. Clair, Jr. This is a district that decided to close schools to help with budget problems and now parents are in the middle of a lawsuit over how the schools are funded in the district. It is a decision that could come down not only to the voters but to the school board. Parents have filed a lawsuit against the state dealing with the way the school district is funded.
Officials believe there will be a low turn out in Tuesday's election. So far 2,500 voters have used the advanced voting method to vote.
