Fatal accidents lead to stepped-up vigilance

Anne Arundel County police are stepping up traffic enforcement at several intersections across the county after two fatal vehicle accidents, the most recent a five-car crash in Severn that killed a 19-year-old man.
Authorities are targeting 10 intersections that they said account for 20 percent of recent accidents in northern Anne Arundel, for increased enforcement.
The intersections affected are Mountain and Jumpers Hole roads; Crain Highway and Fifth Avenue; Dorsey Road and Aviation Boulevard; Route 2 at Mountain Road, Route 648, Sixth Avenue SE, Ordnance Road and Wellham Avenue; Route 648 and Marley Station Road; and Dorsey Road at Interstate 97.
The number of fatal crashes in the county fell from 44 in 2006 to 30 last year. Police could not provide the number of fatal crashes this year.
On Wednesday morning, Jamel Alexander Cross, 19, of Lanham was killed in a crash near WB&A Road and Queenstown Road in Severn, police said.
Sweeny and his front-seat passenger, Charleigh Marie Poulin, 21, of Odenton, were taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Sweeney was in serious but stable condition, and Poulin, who was ejected from the car, was in critical condition yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The Scion struck a large steel wagon wheel near the driveway of a home and then hit a Ford box truck.
The Scion also struck a parked Nissan Pathfinder, pushing it into two other vehicles. The Scion came to a halt on top of the cab of the box truck and caught fire.
No charges have been filed.
Yesterday, state police said they had incorrectly identified the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident. They previously said Jason J. Wise, 25, of the 4600 block of Prudence St. in Baltimore was the driver of a Ford Contour. They now say the driver was Bobbi L. Steiner, 25, also of the 4600 block of Prudence St.
The Ford Contour stopped suddenly in front of a Cadillac Escalade driven by Norfolk at the intersection with Route 648, and the sport utility vehicle struck the rear of the car. A Ford truck then struck the SUV and ruptured its fuel tank, causing a fire.
The stepped-up enforcement, paid for with a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office, began Wednesday and will continue through Sept. 30.
