I suggest that you read what Abraham Joshua Heschel has written on the topic of sensitivity. What I have concluded from Heschel’s writings is that as sensitivity decreases, callousness increases.
We raise our children to be kind to their family and friends. We hold workshops in the schools about bullying to put a stop to this type of behavior. Our social studies curriculum has been updated to teach our students about the Holocaust. We’ve come a long way from the educational philosophy that condoned insensitivity.
