Dr. Lloyd Gerald Carnahan (“Dr. Carnahan” or “Lloyd”) 1929 - 2012

Dr. Carnahan, known by his family as “Paca” and “Papa Lloyd”, and long time Fullerton family pediatrician and resident, passed away on July 9, 2012 at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, California.  Dr. Carnahan was born September 8, 1929 in Compton Illinois to Ralph and Ruth Carnahan.  He was preceded in death by his brother Bill, his sister Mona Thoren and his son Jeffrey.

Lloyd graduated from Rochelle TWP High School in 1946.  He went on to the University of Illinois graduating undergraduate school in 1950 and in 1954 from medical school. Following his graduation from medical school he interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois and became a Naval Flight Surgeon after graduating from the School of Aviation Medicine.  Moving to California in 1957, Dr. Carnahan was a Resident in Pediatrics through the University of Southern California at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.  Dr. Carnahan was Board Certified in Pediatrics and Family Medicine.

Dr. Carnahan moved to Fullerton in 1959 and started his pediatric practice at the Children’s Medical Center.  He served on the medical staff at St. Jude Hospital of Fullerton (where he served as Chairman of Medical Staff in 1969), Children’s Hospital of Orange County, UCI Medical Center, Martin Luther Hospital and Placentia-Linda Community Hospital.

In 1970, Dr. Carnahan was elected to the Fullerton School District Board of Trustees and served as its President in 1974.  He was appointed by the Governor of the State of California two times to serve on the Medical Quality Review Committee from 1978 to 1987.

Dr. Carnahan served as President of the Orange County Pediatric Society and the Los Angeles County Pediatric Society.  He served as a Medical Consultant to the Fullerton School District, the Placentia Unified School District for Neurologically Handicapped, the Yorba Linda School District and the Anaheim Speech and language Development Center for Language Handicapped.  Lloyd also was a volunteer pediatrician on the St. Jude Care for the poor mobile health van for five years after he retired from private practice.

Dr. Carnahan continued his practice for over 40 years caring for generations of families and thousands of children.  Lloyd touched many lives with his thoughtful medical care, his zest for life, humor, friendship and mentoring others.  Lloyd enjoyed life and filled each day caring and giving to others.   He loved his immediate family here in California and loved staying connected to his family in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Lloyd and his wife Ann Carnahan recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.  Lloyd is survived by his two sons and their spouses; Scott and Karen Carnahan and Jay and Kris Carnahan; his daughter and her spouse, Erin and Vaughn Barnes and his eight grandchildren; Cheyne, Courtney, Chase, Ashley, Conner, Christian, Allison and Katie.

We are saying our prayers thanking God for having Paca/Papa Lloyd in our life, and for his many contributions to others in the community. We will all miss Dr. Carnahan; a trusted family doctor, a husband, father and grandfather.
