George Ryan, Can you blame her for tryin'?
For National Poetry Month, a few verses on the George Ryan trial.
SIX WAYS OF LOOKING AT A TRIAL
1. I DID NOT DO IT
"I did not do it!" cried the gov
"But what I did, I did for love
Hey, if I played loose with some dough--
I help my friends and kids, you know?
"Look, politics is just a game
I've done no wrong, I feel no shame
In politics there's just one sin
The great misdeed is to not win.
"As for those special license plates?
That's life in these United States--
I scratch your back then you scratch mine
Where I grew up, that was just fine.
"I don't deserve these diatribes
I did not take those lousy bribes!
My campaign funds? That's Fawell's field
You think I used him as a shield?
"I swear I did not do a crime
