Abstract winner

Raye Chappell is the winner of this week's Reader SunShots category "Abstract" for her photo of a blue fiber optic lamp. Chappell, a senior at The Park School in Baltimore, used a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with an 18mm lens and a two-second exposure to capture the otherworldly image. "Since I love light paintings," she writes, "I decided to take a few long exposure shots of the lamp capturing each fiber as its own little light, dancing around one another."

Sun photo editor Jerry Jackson's critique: "The most successful abstract images keep you guessing as to their origin. This photo reminded me of NASA images of the earth at night taken a few years ago. The framing and shallow depth of field really work here."
