Look Back: Chincoteague Pony Penning

Since 1924 the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, which owns the wild herd of ponies on Assateague Island, rounds up the ponies and swims them across the channel to Chincoteague. The foals are sold yearly to keep the pony population in check and raise money for equipment for the fire department. Ponies that are not sold are returned to Assateauge. This is a collection of photos of the ponies from the Daily Press archives.
