Broken bridge

Professor Orla Wilson, left, was visibly shaken when Sarp Kurum added one too many kilos of weight, causing the bridge project he had worked on with Kelsey Powderly, center, and Zoe Roberts, right, to break. The trio, however, went on to be the eventual champions with their spaghetti bridge successfully supporting 32 kilos or 70.54792 pounds. 25 groups of three to four students compete to see which bridge can hold the most weight without breaking. Past winning bridges have held 130 pounds. This event is the culmination of an intensive four-week course called Engineering Innovation, created by The <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="OREDU0000116" title="Johns Hopkins University" href="/topic/education/colleges-universities/johns-hopkins-university-OREDU0000116.topic">Johns Hopkins University</a>’s Whiting School of Engineering. The course is designed to expose high school students to mechanical, civil, electrical, materials science and chemical engineering, and to teach them critical thinking and problem solving. The classes provide a condensed version of a course that Whiting School students take as freshmen.
