Athletic woes at College Park

The news: The University of Maryland has held back letters of intent to recruits for men's and women's diving and swimming and women's water polo, an indication that those sports may be cut as the athletic department grapples with budget troubles.

Our take: It's only likely to get worse. The athletic department, which fields more teams than most of its peers, has long been running in the red. New Athletic Director Kevin Anderson has his work cut out for him.
