Crime and racial politics

Jesse Jackson

The statistics Thomas F. Schaller quoted about murder cases and drug arrests have to be flawed, I think ("A welcome call for soul-searching about race," July 24). I am willing to bet that what drives them are that the blacks on trial for murder and arrested for drugs, have rap sheets as long as my arms. Just like sweet little Trayvon Martin's two suspensions from school for violations that should have led to arrests are never mentioned in The Sun.

At least The Sun has written that only 52 percent of black males graduate from high school in four years. And I have seen the statistic that 73 percent of births in the African-American community are out of wedlock. These issues need to be addressed, not tricked up stats like yours (I know that are not "yours" per se).

Until the real issues are addressed, Race Industry leaders like The Sun, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc., will continue the contentious history of racial politics in this country. Too bad for most of us blacks and whites who get along and work together.

Seeking 15 minutes of fame, if all of your primary obligations are met, is fine. Does not Baltimore Council member Nick Mosby have any serious problems in his district to solve ("Councilman wants Baltimore to boycott Florida after Zimmerman trial," Aug. 9)?

    Florida boycott plan is half-baked

Baltimore City Councilman Nick Mosby's proposed boycott of Florida is a terrible idea ("Councilman wants Baltimore to boycott Florida after Zimmerman trial," Aug. 9). Since he is trying to protest the "stand your ground" law, it is only fair to protest it across the board. The resolution...

The folly of 'Stand Your Ground' laws

I really identify with the contributor who compared the George Zimmerman verdict to the lynchings of the past ("The new lynching," July 27). The "Stand Your Ground" law in Florida and other states enables people carrying a gun to be the judge, jury and executioner of anyone who appears to...

African-Americans are the ones who need to do some soul-searching

I agreed with almost everything that Thomas F. Schaller said in his recent column on race relations ("A welcome call for soul-searching about race," July 24). I think he was correct in writing that President Barack Obama "cannot be easily dismissed with the usual racial tropes. That is, so long...
