I was surprised and pleased to see David Fahrenthold's article on the federal "cuts in spending" approved in 2011 ("'Smoke & mirrors,'" Feb. 24). I wished he would have pointed out the added smoke and mirrors that persists from this president.
President Barack Obama repeatedly went in front of the television cameras touting the $2.5 trillion in cuts with the fiscal cliff agreement. Looking at that number in detail, the truth is that there wasn't a dime of cuts to the federal budget. He calculated the projected cost of fighting a war in Iraq for the next 10 years (with interest on the money) and called that a $900 billion cut. He also calculated the projected revenue to be gained from the bill and added that to the cut column to the tune of $600 billion. That is a total of $1.5 trillion that never touches the bloated federal budget.
With these "cuts" was also $400 million for Hollywood, over $100 million for manufacturers of electric motorcycles and another $100 million for algae farmers. Really? The American people have a right to know what both parties are really saying. The American people have a right to know the kind of Chicago-style partisan politics this president plays at our expense.
The media including The Sun have a real opportunity to gain the public's respect. Where are the Woodwards and Bernsteins of today?
