The Redskins and the thought police [Letter]

The Washington Redskins registered their trademark with the U.S. Patent Office in 1967. From all accounts, there were no complaints. That same office, acting arbitrarily, capriciously and unreasonably, revoked the trademark this week, bowing to continuing pressure from groups opposed to the name as a "racial slur" ("Washington's offensive line," June 20). Oklahoma, which got it's name from the Choctaw Indians, means, "red people"! Should the state be forced to change it's name, also? Hundreds of Native American schools throughout the country proudly use the nickname "Redskins." Should they be forced to change their nicknames, too?

George Orwell's novel "1984" depicts a fictional nation of Oceania governed by "thought police." We are fast becoming a nation similar to Oceania as we continue to be governed more and more by "political correctness" than the rule of law!

In a country of over 300 million people, someone somewhere at sometime is going to be offended by something. That doesn't necessarily mean it's offensive. And more importantly, who gets to decide — the government, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, sportscaster Bob Costas, The Sun?

Jerrold L. Brotman, Timonium

Wikipedia notes that although the connotation of the term Redskins is debatable, the term is defined in current dictionaries of American English as "usually offensive, disparaging, insulting, and taboo" ("Facts and logic say rename Redskins," June 27).
