Tears for mall victims but none for city's? [Letter]

How touching that Gov. Martin O'Malley, Rep. Elijah Cummings and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman found time to show support for the mall shooting victims on Monday ("Community begins to rebuild as Columbia mall reopens," Jan. 27).

But why were these deaths any more important than those that occur almost daily in Baltimore City? Are those slaughters any less "tragic?" I dare say our caring leaders could be kept quite busy posturing in the city, but of course there are no media crews there to capture their concern for a national TV audience. Too bad.
