Santorum's views on the environment run counter to Catholic teaching

The Sun is correct in its editorial "Santorum and 'phony theology'" (Feb. 21). Rick Santorum is wrong and counter to Catholic teaching about the environment.

In 1992, the bishops in the United States published a document entitled "Renewing the Earth." In it the bishops praised St. Francis and reminded Catholics that: "Safeguarding creation requires us to live responsibly in it, rather than managing creation as though we are outside it." Pope John Paul II called for Christians to respect and protect the environment so that through nature people can "contemplate the mystery of the greatness and love of God." Protection of the environment is not extremist but a principle of Christianity, Judaism, Islam and many other religions.
