The Sailabration crowds were covered with cops. We had our photos taken with groups of them, wherever we went. It reminded me of London. Some were in dress uniforms, and these fine officers seemed to be pulled from other duties, like desk jobs. They likely were briefed to smile and be cordial, to throw a veil over their real purpose and everyday jobs.

The youth gangs aren't stupid. Their mission to disrupt, to cause fear and to intimidate took a vacation. My guess is they will be back. Del. Pat McDonough's personal experience with a youth mob will likely be repeated for tourists over the coming months. He is right on target, and Dan Rodricks cannot get away with his rosy comments about how safe downtown is, based on Sailabration ("Sailabration brings out the mobs," June 19).
