I would like to commend the excellent work that was conducted over the past week by Coast Guard Sector Baltimore. Under the outstanding leadership of Captain Mark O'Malley, Sector Baltimore had three very challenging events within a very short time span: President Obama's visit to Baltimore, Sailabration 2012, and the safe passage of four super-sized cranes headed to the Port of Baltimore.
Each of these events provided unique challenges. They took weeks, months and even years of planning. They also required coordination with other federal, state and local agencies.
As it turned out, every one of these events succeeded without any significant incidents. That was not luck. We are very fortunate in Baltimore and in Maryland to have an exceptional local Coast Guard sector and leader. That is something that should not be taken for granted.
