Tax cuts beget deficits, which beget cuts to programs for the poor

Thank you for printing Linda Cades’ letter, “GOP tax bill is a loser” (Nov. 20). I appreciate her description of the many benefits of the bill for wealthy people as opposed to the middle class. We also need to remember the effect of this proposed tax bill on hard-working, low-income people. The bill’s authors concede that it will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion over 10 years. We know from previous Republican budget resolutions that they will use that increase to justify their planned cuts to — and disastrous structural changes of — successful anti-poverty programs. I encourage Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen to continue their support of people in our community who are working to rise up from poverty, and to fight against this tax bill.
