Sharing the grief of a deceased sailor's family

The front page photograph of Darrold Martin overcome with grief as he buried his son Petty Officer 1st Class Xavier Martin was heartrending (“Halethorpe sailor who died in USS Fitzgerald collision buried at Arlington cemetery,” Aug. 9). It was difficult to view, but it was also difficult not to look and reflect upon Mr. Martin's great loss.

I hope Mr. Martin is not troubled by our seeing his pain and sorrow. While we cannot know the depths of his sadness, he should know that our community and our nation mourn with him. He should know that the sacrifice that his son has made was not in vain and that this community will not forget him.

May Mr. Martin and his family find peace.
