The Sun’s print edition endorsement of Sen. Bobby Zirkin for the 11th District omitted a crucial sentence from its online endorsement about his opponent, attorney Sheldon Laskin (“Baltimore County legislative endorsements,” June 20). The Sun’s online endorsement stated, correctly, that “Mr. Laskin would be a good senator — his expertise in state taxation for example, is impressive…”
But there is much more to say. It isn’t just Sheldon’s tax expertise that is impressive. I have known Sheldon for years, as a fellow member of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation where he served as co-chair of the Social Justice Team. He worked extensively on the campaign for a $15 per hour minimum wage. Sheldon and I canvassed the 11th district together to urge voters to call Senator Zirkin to reverse his vote against paid sick leave and support the override of Gov. Larry Hogan’s veto. On a wide range of social and economic justice issues, Sheldon has worked tirelessly to advance justice in Maryland and in the 11th. Senator Zirkin too often has used his position as chair of the Judicial Proceedings Committee to resist improving justice for marginalized Maryland residents. This is why I enthusiastically support Sheldon’s campaign.
