President Barack Obama's position on smoking marijuana is extremely misguided ("Obama: pot a 'vice' but no more dangerous than alcohol," Jan. 19).
As a 60-year-old boomer who has for the most part drunk responsibly for 45 years and has experimented with marijuana on occasion, I adamantly reject his opinion equating smoking pot to smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. While drinking alcohol in moderation can gradually deteriorate one's ability to function adequately, smoking even a small amount of marijuana can debilitate a person in minutes without a warning.
I guess I got better stuff than President Obama because the few times I tried this "vice," recognizing the spoken word became impossible, paranoia overtook me, driving five miles an hour became my modus operandi and passing out would become my end game. This would happen with just a few hits over 40 years ago when the stuff wasn't as potent as it is today.
There are legitimate arguments to be made for legalization, but suggesting it's just a bad habit like smoking cigarettes or no more dangerous than drinking alcohol is not one of them!
