Thanks to The Sun and to City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young for a great column on how to make our youth smarter and happier and our city safer ("More police isn't the answer for Baltimore," Oct. 3).
It makes both social and financial sense to promote healthy development rather than to wait until there is delinquency and then intervene.
Since retiring in 2008, I have spent quite a bit of time with teens who are involved in after-school activities. While many of these kids come from distressed neighborhoods, I am amazed at how creative, intelligent and socially engaged they are. No doubt Council President Young has seen the same hopeful signs.
Our kids have so much potential in the arts, athletics and academics, and it is in everyone's interest to help them realize it.
