It makes no sense to invest billions of dollars into such a dead-end technology as oil pipelines which will be obsolete and of ever-declining value over the next dozen years as we burn up yet more and more of our declining fossil reserves ("Keystone XL is one more hole in a sinking ship," Feb. 5). Instead, we should be investing in long-distance electric transmission lines to move our unlimited, renewable, 100 percent American electricity resources from where they are plentiful to where they are needed. That will be the real keystone to our sustainable future.
Measuring the wealth of our limited oil and gas resources by how much we grow our production is like measuring wealth by how fast we can spend our savings. The fastest way to bankruptcy as a nation is riding this wave of oil company greed by speeding up our production and consumption of ever dwindling fossil fuels.
On the other hand, the fastest way to our clean renewable energy future is to be investing now in the electric grid, transmission lines and solar and wind. Electrons from the sunny Southwest or the winds of the Great Plains can be moved at the speed of light anywhere in the country if we just invest in buried transmission lines instead of buried oil pipelines.
Just as many jobs are created by transmission. But our future is cleaner and brighter as a result.
