I am a parent and grandparent and always read her columns when they appear in our paper. My parents passed away in the mid-1980s, and I definitely regret not thanking them more for the sacrifices they made to provide a stable home, an education, vacations and countless other things that many children in the world have no access to.
Ms. Reimer is so right in saying that a simple "thank you" means more to a parent than any store-bought gift. Those thanks come directly from the heart.
