I keep hearing everyone claiming President Barack Obama lied when he said, "If you have a health care plan you like, you can keep it. Period." So now, in light of the undeniable fact that thousands of substandard insurance plans have been canceled, everyone feels like they've been lied to. But I think everyone is seeing deviousness in the presidents words, whereas what his words actually reflect is his naivete — or maybe just a profound misunderstanding of the American psyche.
President Obama's words clearly indicate that he never even considered the idea that perhaps many Americans are so incredibly stupid that they simply love being ripped off. Remember the woman who had her entire life savings bilked by a famous televangelist? After that crook went to jail and the woman had her money returned, she was interviewed to find out how happy she was. Astonishingly, the woman was furious that her money had been returned, and she stated her intention to send the money right back to him as soon as he got out of jail. So President Obama either totally overestimated the intelligence of the American public, or he discounted their love of spending their money on fool's errands. Either way, it was clearly the type of mistake that overly educated do-gooders have been making since the birth of this country.
Perhaps President Obama would improve his approval ratings if he started modeling himself less on Mahatma Gandhi and a little more on P.T. Barnum.
