Just what is it about some human beings and their accrual of wealth? Take the lowly (soon to be former) owner Donald Sterling of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers ("Donald Sterling, tarnished," April 30). I find it fascinating and frightening how acquisition of uber wealth can be so very mentally debilitating to some who acquire it.
Mr. Sterling is probably one of the wealthiest men in California and owns real estate in the Beverly Hills area. Does his overly wealthy status grant him license to be ignorant and insensitive?
He obviously equates wealth with power and some become so very consumed by both that they anoint themselves untouchables. In doing so, they become so very estranged from the real world. Kudos to the NBA and new commissioner Adam Silver for meting out swift and severe action toward Mr. Sterling. We are in a new era where boorish behavior and juvenile, hateful attitudes cannot, and will not, be tolerated.
Just as with life, the NBA has it flaws. But I believe the NBA has done the nation a great service by taking measures to oust this addle-headed man from the league. There's no simply no longer room for feeble-minded, idiotic owners who have a twisted and warped perspective on the world.
