Mikulski's well deserved honor

Sen. Barbara Mikulski put her social work training to good use in Congress.

I congratulate Sen. Barbara Mikulski on receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor ("Mikulski among 17 being honored at White House," Nov. 24).

Senator Mikulski is an esteemed alumna of the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and her career has been marked by trailblazing advocacy on issues that mean so much to the UMB community: making higher education affordable, so that all of our citizens might realize the dreams that give their lives purpose; enriching America's scientific enterprise, so that we might sustain our global leadership in discovery and innovation; increasing spending on health research, so that we might live longer and stronger and grieve fewer loved ones lost to preventable and curable diseases.

Senator Mikulski deserves to be honored with this acclaimed award for her indefatigable fight on behalf of those who need our compassionate efforts the most.
