Legalized pot is about freedom of choice [Letter]

Consumers

Regrading Mike Gimbel's recent letter ("Say no to legalized pot," Jan. 12), the issue is not whether cannabis is completely safe for everybody but rather freedom of choice for adults.

One in 13 children suffer from food allergies, yet we have not criminalized food. Children have died from eating peanuts, but we don't cage peanut growers, sellers or consumers.

The voters of Colorado and Washington state have decided we should not cage cannabis growers, sellers or consumers. I submit that the rest of the nation should follow their example.

I think it should be a person's own choice to do whatever drug a person chooses as long as it doesn't involve committing a crime to acquire the drug. When it comes to marijuana, we should be able to have and smoke as much as we like ("Fixing Md.'s marijuana law," Oct. 3).

Regarding Daniel Takash's thoughtful commentary on marijuana laws, marijuana prohibition is indefensible ("Marijuana legalization is the only option," Oct. 27).
