In the words of Ronald Reagan, "there he goes again."
Lying that is. AndRobert L. Ehrlich Jr.is the fellow doing it.
Rehearsing a staple of the GOP spin-machine, the former governor ("Give pols a pass for verbal miscues," March 18) proclaims "President Barack Obama's propensity for apologizing to the world for past U.S. policy decisions..."
As documented on Feb. 22 of last year by Washington Post "fact-checker" Glenn Kessler, there is and never occurred any such thing as an "Obama apology tour."
"The claim that Mr. Obama repeatedly has apologized for the United States is not borne out by the facts, especially if his full quotes are viewed in context.
"Mr. Obama often tries to draw a rhetorical distinction between his policies and those of President George W. Bush, a common practice when the presidency changes parties. The shift in policies, in fact, might have been more dramatic from Bill Clinton to Mr. Bush than from Mr. Bush to Mr. Obama, given how Mr. Obama has largely maintained his predecessor's approach to fighting terrorism.
"In other cases, Mr. Obama's quotes have been selectively trimmed for political purposes. Republicans may certainly disagree with the president's handling of foreign policy or particular policies he has pursued, but they should not invent a story line that does not appear to exist."
Note to GOP speechwriters and campaign ad makers: The apology tour never happened.
