Do politicians who take gifts from developers really think they are doing nothing wrong?

Why do politicians continue to take money and favors from developers and others? ("Kamenetz, council members got tickets from developers," May 2). Don't they realize how this looks and that favors are expected in return?

One of the attorneys who represents a large land development corporation gave Orioles tickets to a Baltimore County councilman who has much influence on whether or not a big development gets cut back or not.

A councilwoman, who got $732 worth of tickets says, "It was a nice treat for members of my family." At what price was this "treat" in the long run? Is nothing expected in return?

One councilman, who went on a free fishing trip, tried to explain why he accepted the gift by saying "most of these things are just building relationships with people."

But the relationships look more like: You give, and I'll take. There's no guarantee that no strings are attached.

Even County Executive Kevin Kamenetz is implicated: He got thousands of dollars worth of gifts from various benefactors, including $2,600 worth of Raven tickets, which he says was OK because they were "for his wife."

Congratulations to Todd Huff and Ken Oliver, who seem to be the only ones who didn't accept any gifts last year.
