How is Jamal Lewis able to file for bankruptcy?

I am a little surprised that Jamal Lewis is able to file for bankruptcy ("Lewis bankruptcy offers a peek at former Raven's life," June 10).

According to the article, Mr. Lewis makes on average $35,000 per month and declared about $14.5 million in assets and $10.6 million in liabilities.

If my math is correct, it seems that Mr. Lewis could sell off some of his assets to pay off all of his liabilities and still have $3.9 million left over.

What am I missing here?
