As someone raised Catholic and opposed to illegal immigration, I believe it's wrong for church officials to say that the current influx unaccompanied minors crossing our borders is all about the children and then seek governmental aid to care for them ("Catholic Charities seeks to house immigrant children in Baltimore County," July 17).

If any organizations have a responsibility to care for these individuals, it is the churches. Rather than seeking government assistance, they should be asking not only the federal and state governments how they can help and what resources they need but more importantly they should be asking the governments of the countries these individuals are leaving so they can remain safe in their homelands.

I believe in the separation of church and state, and I do not support either federal or state governments paying churches to do what churches should be doing on their own, which is helping the poor and disadvantaged while teaching them church beliefs.
