We need fresh voices with bipartisan ideas in Annapolis. After attending a Howard County candidates forum in Savage on May 21, I heard two such voices running for a District 13 seat in the House of Delegates — one from each party.
Democrat Najab Siddiqui had the soft-spoken insight of a local business owner, job creator and professional engineer. His desire for excellence in both the county and the state was well evident. He provides a sound choice for those party voters who want change in their district representation.
Republican Jimmy Williams provided refreshing new perspectives about jobs, the Chesapeake Bay and higher education challenges. As the youngest person statewide in either party running for delegate, he can inspire others to become more involved in state and local politics. Several candidates for nonpartisan offices spoke with me after the meeting on other matters and all expressed amazement with his passion and eloquence.
Both candidates avoided the traps of merely pushing a standard party agenda or justifying the status quo. They both deserve your vote on June 24 as well as in the general election.
