Don't force helmets on bike riders

In the article by Scott Dance ("Helmet bill gets objections from bike advocates," Feb. 13), a supporter of the helmet bill, Nancy Floreen, is quoted as saying, "We have a moral obligation to help people in this regard." So, even if help is neither requested nor desired, the government must force it's "help" upon us. I'm reminded of what Ronald Reagan said: The most frightening words in the English language are, "We're the government. We're here to help." While I think that it's foolish to ride a bicycle or a motorcycle without a helmet or to drive without a seat belt, a law to protect us from ourselves is going too far.

Riding a bicycle in traffic would be far less dangerous if the riders would simply obey traffic laws, like stop signs, traffic lights and direction of travel.
